“Edge” gets thrown around in every cloud keynote, but for product teams the question is practical: should your HTML, APIs, or heavy logic run closer to the user instead of in a single central region?
What we mean by edge
Traditionally your stack lived in one or a few data centres. Edge platforms run code or cache responses at many points of presence worldwide, so the first byte often travels a shorter distance. That matters for interactive UIs, real-time features, and anyone far from your primary region.
Where you feel the win
- Latency-sensitive UX — auth checks, personalization, or A/B splits that must run before paint.
- Global audiences — when your median user is not next to
us-east-1. - Cacheable or read-heavy paths — HTML, JSON, or images at the edge can absorb traffic before it hits origin.
Trade-offs to respect
Edge is not free complexity. You get distributed state, trickier debugging, and limits on runtime and memory. Writes and strong consistency still usually point back to a central database or queue—you are optimising the read path and orchestration, not abolishing CAP theorem.
A sane decision frame
Start from user-visible latency and cost. Measure p95 for your critical routes. If edge caching or edge functions remove a real bottleneck without duplicating business logic everywhere, it is worth a proof of concept. If you are only chasing buzz, a well-tuned CDN in front of a solid monolith or regional API is often enough.

Edge computing is a deployment and caching strategy, not a religion. Use it when geography and latency are provably hurting your product—and keep your core domain model somewhere you can reason about clearly.
